FAITH, BELIEF,THE MUSTARD SEED

JESUS DISCUSSES THE POWERS OF FAITH
Jesus discusses faith several times with His Apostles and compares a man's faith to a mustard seed, in order to demonstrate how little faith it takes to believe in God and how powerful even a tiny bit of faith can be in ones life, for instance:
MATTHEW: 17: 20; "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your belief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed ye shall say unto the mountain remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove and nothing shall be impossible to you."
LUKE: 17: 5-6; "And the apostles said unto the Lord, 'Increase our Faith'." And the Lord said, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed ye might say unto the sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you."
Note biblically speaking, belief and faith translate the same even though they have different spellings and different pronunciations. One cannot have faith, if one does not believe and visa versa.
When I first read these two scriptures, I had to read them a second and a third time. I then had to ask myself as I ask now: Was Jesus discussing self faith, or faith only in God, or was it a combined faith in God working through myself. It only took me a few seconds to ask myself the question and for Holy Spirit to give me the proper answer with God's Holy explanation.
I was reminded that faith without God, in other words self-faith was foolish, for without God failure is just around the corner. I was also reminded that faith in God without action is worth nothing, but if one has faith in God and belief that one can accomplish, where necessary with God's direct help one can accomplish miracles.
As children and teens, often parents or teachers or coaches will tell us that we can accomplish or become anything we desire, so long as we have faith in ourself, and this is true so long as we trust God to be the provider of all that we need to pull off these accomplishments. Without God's guidance we accomplish very little success.
With these scriptures, to those who are simply inquisitive, or the not yet Christian, or to the Newly Converted, seeking to learn about Jesus and about Christianity, it might appear as though Jesus is referring to "Self Faith" believing that even without God, one might be able to do as Jesus suggests, that if one believes strong enough, in one's self that they could accomplish the virtually impossible. We have to help these people to understand that faith in God and faith in self must be combined.
We are led to think self-faith, because Jesus as he talked to His Apostles, knew and understood that His Apostles understood that of course Jesus was including God into the equation, but had He been addressing the five thousand as He did in His Sermon on The Mount He would have been more careful in the choice of His words.

Agreed. Sometimes we are told to have faith in our faith. But your hub accurately points to a faith that is dependent upon God alone. Apart from Him we can do nothing. He is the focus of our faith.
Blessed by your observation of the truth.
Dave: I have heard many sermon's over the years on this very topic. You very eloquently explained it. Outstanding and very well done..Thank you, for today is one of those days that I feel very much like that little mustard seed...Thumbs Up !
Yo brother Dave. I have faith. I know what rules the Earth right now too. I have faith that there will be a reckoning. God bless!
Without faith it is impossible to please God. Thank you for sharing this insightful hub. Blessings and regards.
Up and useful, Dave. This distinction can be tricky for folks You clarify very well. Thank you! I pray that many will read this and be impacted by it.
I read this and the more I read the bigger my smile. I've always said that we throw around the word faith but we don't tell people "how".... and, like you said faith in God is the biggest part---but faith in what you are trying to accomplish and you must have faith in yourself for it all to work. God can do mighty things with a little faith in all those areas. Thank you!
Thanks for this hub Dave. You know we all have faith regardless if we sometimes doubt it
E.g. when we take a tablet we have faith that it will ease our pain.
When the doctor says buy such and such cream and the rash will go away we immediately feel good and go to try what we was told.
When we work we apply faith , we work and hope and hold faith to receive our pay cheque/check.
Thanks again i will be doing a hub on FAITH soon it's a vital topic.
God bless you my Brother
Great article and video! Thank you so much for sharing.
"We have to help these people to understand that faith in God and faith in self must be combined."
This is very true because we can see that part of the reason that the Israelites wondered in the desert for 40 years was because they did not have faith in God's ability to help them possess their Promised Land and also they did not have faith in their ability to conquer the giants who dwelt in their Promised Land.
Therefore, as you rightly said, we have to believe God and His Word and believe in ourselves and in our God given abilities.
Awesome hub!!!
Thumbs up and voted up!
Thanx for sharing!
Good thoughts Dave. God helps even when we don't realize it. If God were to remove His hand from our lives they would be a disaster because Satan comes only to steal, kill and destroy. thanks Dave. Voted up and awesome.
are you saying God goofed? I think he said it like it was suppose to be said. I think Jesus figures the ones that know are the ones that his spirit has elaborated on Jesus words. what do you think?
This is a great article. I was raised to believe that faith and believing were basically the same thing, but now I see that there is a huge difference. And you are right, you can't have one without the other.
